Abstract
This metadata file pertains to the Natural Soils Landscape Position (NSLP) Layer for all counties in the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD). Metadata files for each of the counties will also be developed and included with that county's NSLP data. The NSLP layer is well-documented on the District's Internet site (see http://www.sfwmd.gov/org/pld/proj/wetcons). The user is advised to visit that site to obtain a detailed understanding of all apspects of this layer. This metadata file will therefore contain only a general overview and any specific details that may not be available from the internet site. Much of the text for this file was taken from the internet site. The NSLP layer is a reclassification that was obtained directly from the SSURGO databases. SSURGO stands for 'Soil Survey Geographic'. It was digitized from the Soil Surveys developed over many years by the USDA Soil Conservation Service, now NRCS. It is the highest resolution soil data available from the NRCS. SSURGO (and NSLP) maps are not available for a large portion of the District, including most of the Everglades National Park, Big Cypress Preserve, and other adjacent or similar areas. The incomplete counties are Dade, Monroe, Palm Beach and Broward. The NSLP layer was produced for all counties in the SFWMD. For those counties that extend into adjacent Districts (SWF and SJR) the whole county was completed and included in the NSLP layer. Much of the following text was taken from Technical Publication WS-06 - Soil Classification; Database: Categorization of County Soil Survey Data within the SFWMD, Including Natural Soils Landscape Positions, available in PDF format at the NSLP website. The Soil Classification Database is a reclassification of county soil survey data published by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), formerly the Soil Conservation Service (SCS). A total of 907 soil map units were sorted by similar hydrological, morphological, and vegetation characteristics. New classification fields resulting from this process were added to the database to allow the user to group soils data into categories based upon specific characteristics. The Soils Classification Database does not improve the accuracy, reliability, or quality of the soils data; the method presented here seeks only to improve the usability of the data. Please refer to the section entitled “Use of the Soils Classifications” before applying any classifications outlined in this publication.
