Managing over 1,900 miles of canals and levees. Balancing and improving water quality. Monitoring the delicate ecosystems and wildlife of central and southern Florida. This is just a sample of the important work that we do every day at South Florida Water Management District.
Our mission is to ensure that there is enough good quality water 50 years from now to meet the needs of people and the environment. This entails balancing the competing needs of urban development, agricultural needs, and the natural environment. A major portion of this mission involves flood control, where we calibrate our flood control system to capture the 1.7 billion gallons of water now lost to the sea, while imitating the way nature delivered water to the Everglades before widespread development altered the environment. We also work to protect water quality as well as manage and restore natural systems.
It's incredibly challenging work. It's fulfilling work. It's work the world is watching, which leaves an important legacy to central and southern Florida for decades to come.
