Water Supply

Will there be enough water for the more than 7 million people living in central and southern Florida today? What about in 20 years from now? If people have what they need, will there also be enough for the natural systems and wildlife that make our region so special?

To make sure the supply of water meets the needs of today's and tomorrow's residents and natural environments, the SFWMD regulates the withdrawal of ground and surface water throughout the region.

Rainfall replenishes the aquifers that supply more than 90% of the region's drinking water. But rain is scarcest when demand is highest, stressing water supplies. SFWMD works with other state agencies and local governments to protect current and future water supplies. more >

Reuse, Desalination, Aquifer Storage & Recovery and Funding Assistance are some of the alternatives being adopted by municipalities, counties, and the state's five water management districts to protect and develop water supplies. These cooperative partnerships were outlined in the Water Protection and Sustainability Program, enacted by the 2005 Florida Legislature. more >

Even in Florida, where we are surrounded by water, conservation is important. Find out why supplies are sometimes scarce, and how you can help save our region's water supplies by making small changes in the ways you use water. more >
SFWMD image Water Use Regulation
A Water Use Permit allows a user to withdraw a specified amount of water, either from the ground, a canal, a lake or a river. The water can be used for a public water supply; to irrigate crops, nursery plants or golf courses; or for industrial processes. more >

A Well Construction Permit may be required prior to installation of a well within the District. The permits ensure that wells are constructed by licensed water well contractors and conform to water use permit standards. more >
