Our Organization

A place that lets you dive right into your work.

Guided by a vision to be the world's premier water resource agency, SFWMD is a government organization that protects a vast regional water system, which extends 240 miles from the Upper Chain of Lakes into the Kissimmee River and Lake Okeechobee, then south into the Everglades and Florida Bay.

A nine-member Governing Board--appointed by the Governor and approved by the Florida Senate--sets policy and provides overall direction for this agency, which is the oldest and largest of the state's five water management districts.

Our work involves:

  • Operating the primary flood-control system to make it possible for us to live and work safely in our communities.

  • Safeguarding our regional water supplies for people and the environment, for today and the future.

  • Ensuring water quality in the interconnected Kissimmee-Okeechobee-Everglades ecosystem, one of the most diverse in the world.

  • Moving forward aggressively with our commitment to restore and protect our natural systems.
