The Title and Closing Section handles the following functions of the Land Acquisition Department:
Title Abstracts, Examination and Searches
Real Estate Closings
Release of Reservations
Surplus Lands and Conveyance of Easements
Relocation of Displaced Persons under Public Law 91-646
Certification and Crediting to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
Title searches are conducted by our experienced staff of Title Examiners in support of all District programs, including Land Acquisition, Land Stewardship, Right of Way, Regulation, Office of Counsel, Operations/Maintenance, Construction and Engineering. Our Title Examiners travel throughout the 16 county jurisdiction of the District to conduct their research, in addition to utilizing online title information sources. Their research is relied upon by the District when planning its various activities.
The section’s Closing Specialists handle all of the closings of land acquired for District projects, disposals and exchanges of District lands (surplus) and conveyances of easements over District lands for public benefit. They also handle the release of reservations held by the District as the successor to our predecessor agencies, the Everglades Drainage District and the Central and Southern Florida Flood Control District. We also act as the local agency processing approvals for release of canal reservations reserved by the Board of Trustees of the Internal Improvement Fund, or “TIIF”.

When acquiring land for the District, title commitments are obtained from approved vendors (attorneys and title insurance agents) in anticipation of closing. The chosen vendor will coordinate with one of the District’s experienced Closing Specialists and the seller of the property to handle the closing and issue a title policy insuring the District’s purchase. If you are an attorney or a title insurance agent and would like to be added to our vendor list, please click here.
