Operations and Maintenance Resources (O&M) is responsible for routine and emergency operations and maintenance of Works of the District including the Central and Southern Florida Flood Control Project (C&SF) built by the Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) in the 1950s and 1960s, the Everglades Construction Project (ECP), and the evolving Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) program. Today, the C&SF Project remains one of the world's largest public works projects.
Mission
The O&M mission is to render the highest level of professional service by maximizing the current resources available within O&M for the purpose of providing quality operations and maintenance of the water resource facilities and infrastructure for the primary means of water supply and flood protection with a balanced focus on natural system preservation and water quality improvements.
Structures, Canals, Levees & Pump Stations
Eight O&M field stations from Kissimmee to Homestead operate and maintain structures, gates, pump stations, canals and levees in the Central & South Florida Project for flood control and in the Stormwater Treatment Areas for water quality restoration. Overhauls of pump stations and structures, including preventive maintenance are conducted by field station employees.
Operations and Maintenance operates and maintains 60 pump stations throughout the South Florida Water Management District. Trained personnel operate pumping stations to move water through Central and Southern Florida for water supply and flood protection.
Vegetation and Land Management
Operations and Maintenance controls nuisance vegetation in all District-managed rights-of-way, canals, lakes and wetlands and provides continuous surveillance of hydro-meteorological conditions.
