Western Broward County Turf & Landscape Best Management Practices (BMPs)
The goal of this web site/manual is to reduce nonpoint source pollution in the C-11 West Basin by providing information and guidance on landscape management practices -- for homeowners and landscaping professionals. The management practices described here are a foundation for educating both the homeowner and the landscape professional. Individual homeowners may require a selective viewing or use of portions of the manual.
For the education of homeowners, this manual provides no landscape practices but a review and explanation of common sense applications that will reduce the risk of pollution and, in many cases, improve the health and appearance of their yard.
For the landscape professional, this manual should be used to enhance their own judgment and professional qualifications, but should not be viewed as a regulatory standard to be rigidly applied in all cases.
The C-11 West Basin is located in west central Broward County, southwest of Ft. Lauderdale and east of Water Conservation Areas 3A and 3B in the Florida Everglades. Stormwater runoff from this 45,730-acre (72 square miles) basin flows into the "C-11 West Canal," also known as the South New River Canal, which is located between Griffin Road and Orange Drive.
It is an artificial drainage basin operated by the South Florida Water Management District (the "District") to provide flood control and to collect stormwater from three local drainage districts (Central Broward Water Control District, South Broward Drainage District, and Indian Trace Development District).
The C-11 West drainage basin encompasses the portion of the C-11 Basin generally west of Nob Hill Road or Palm Avenue -- and includes all or parts of Weston, Davie, Cooper City, Pembroke Pines, Southwest Ranches and Sunrise. In contrast to the rest of the C-11 Basin, which drains east to the Atlantic Ocean, most of the runoff from the C-11 West Basin is pumped westward -- through the S-9 Pump Station just west of US 27 -- into the Everglades Protection Area.

Freddy Signs
The blue and white signs featuring "Freddy the Alligator" mark drainage canals managed by the South Florida Water Management District. The District operates and maintains more than 2,000 miles of canals and water control structures in 16 south Florida counties -- from Orlando to Key West. The C-11 West Canal is a drainage canal that can return storm water to the Everglades -- in this case by way of S-9 (Structure #9) near Holiday Park.
