About Martin/St. Lucie Service Center

The service area of the Martin/St. Lucie Service Center includes all of Martin and St. Lucie Counties. This region is one of the most rapidly growing areas of the state. As the region develops, it continues to place increasing demands on water supply and adequate flood protection.

What We Do: An Overview

Service Centers tailor the delivery of SFWMD programs and services to local governments, citizens and special interest groups. This provides a two-way link between the SFWMD and the community – to most effectively support local program missions, goals and objectives.

Service Center functions include: assisting in the delivery of District regulatory criteria, water supply planning, land management and estuarine research and monitoring programs; providing direct/indirect financial and or technical assistance to local governments; serving as a communication link between the District and the local community; implementing/promoting environmental education/awareness programs; assisting in both internal and external agency coordination; and assisting local governments in post disaster recovery efforts.

Regional Resources

Martin & St. Lucie counties' water resources are varied. They range from the miles and miles of canals and structures that cross the counties to increasingly rare wetland, riverine and estuarine areas. The day to day maintenance of the primary canals and structures are handled by the District's Okeechobee Field Station and the Ft. Pierce Area Office. They are responsible for maintaining the canal rights-of-way and making sure they are clear of debris or any other blockages.

State law also gives the SFWMD permitting authority for projects involving issues ranging from wetland mitigation to making sure there is enough available water supply for new and existing development. Permit review staff operate out of the Service Center as well as SFWMD Headquarters Permitting/Regulation staff in West Palm Beach.
