Stormwater Treatment Area (STA) Management Division

Long-Term Plan

The Long-Term Plan for Achieving Water Quality Goals ("Long-Term Plan") is the State's blueprint for acheiving the phosphorus criterion in the Everglades Protection Area.  The Plan consists of an optimal combination of source controls, Stormwater Treatment Areas (STAs), Advanced Treatment Technologies (ATTs), regulatory programs and integration with CERP projects.  In addition the Plan continues the strong science-based and adaptive implementation philosophy to allow continuous improvement until the long term water quality goal is achieved.

Operations Support and Permitting

STA operational support is provided to assist in short and long term decision-making to manage STAs to achieve optimal performance.  Examples of operational support include the update and maintenance of 2-dimensional hydrologic models which can be used to predict flow distribution in the STAs, and the development of stage - volume relationships for each cell of each STA which can be used to determine water volumes and hydrologic detention times in the STAs.  Specific support is provided through developing and continually refining operational plans for the STAs.

STA Optimization and Research
The Long-Term Plan established a technical framework for the optimization of STAs for the purpose of meeting water quality goals for the Everglades.  The goal of STA Optimization & Research is to perform applied research and analyses that will assist in determining how STAs can effectively treat water over time.

Flow, water quality, vegetation, and soil data are all collected on a routine basis, and used to understand removal performance of the STAs, and the analysis and interpretation of this data is intended to form the basis for potential modifications to the configuration or operation of STAs.
