Caloosahatchee River & Estuary

The Caloosahatchee River and Estuary are located on the Southwest Coast of Florida. The Caloosahatchee River is about 60 km long and connects Lake Okeechobee to the Caloosahatchee Estuary at the Franklin Lock and Dam (S-79). The Estuary is some 42 km in length and runs from S-79 to Shell Point. The hydrology of the River has been altered by dredging, channelization, an artificial connection to Lake Okeechobee and its use as a water supply for urban and agricultural uses. As a result, the magnitude and timing of water delivery to the Estuary has been altered.

A Minimum Flow and Level for the River and Estuary was established in September 2001. The MFL is being reviewed in 2002. This website and related reports document the methods and technical criteria used by staff of the South Florida Water Management District to develop minimum flows and levels for the Caloosahatchee River and Estuary.
