Water Conservation Technical Assistance

The Conservation Section of the Water Supply department provides technical assistance to utilities considering conservation programs, reuse projects, or alternative water supply projects.

  • We partner with the District's service centers to provide funding for local conservation activities, outreach and educational programs.
  • We provide publications and guides to homeowners to help them plant a water-efficient landscape, and to care for the landscape in the most water-wise manner.
  • We provide cooperative funding to research organizations to discover innovative water conservation technologies, and develop landscape and turf with low water needs.
  • We work with the Office of Counsel, Regulation Department, and other water management districts in rulemaking efforts for conservation and water shortage requirements for local governments, and for water use permitting.
  • We represent the South Florida Water Management District on the Statewide Conserve Florida Committee spearheaded by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and in the implementation of House Bill 293/ 2004 Florida Legislature which requires the Water Management Districts to take a leadership role in the creating statewide standards for efficient landscape irrigation.

The District's Water Conservation Outreach and Education activities include:

Development of conservation projects, programs and wateruse permit planning with cities and counties throughout the District.

Major water using industries and professional associations are assisted through regional programs such as the "Water Wisely Southwest Florida-'Conservation Starts in Your Own Back Yard' Program" in Charlotte, Collier and Lee Counties.

We provide technical and funding assistance in conjunction with other District Departments, for example, working with the Creative Services Department and the District's Regional Service Centers, on Water Conservation.

Current projects include Broward County's "Water Matters" conservation campaign, which focuses on industry and commerce creating pilot water conservation projects in the community; Water Fests for school children in Osceola, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties; the Okeechobee County Schools' Freshmen Campus project on Agricultural Best Management Practices (BMPs); the Orange County Nature Conservancy's "Welcome to your Watershed" workshops, and the Linen Reuse Program, a hotel water conservation effort. Technical staff also participates annually in the Florida Keys Green Living and Energy Education (GLEE) event.
