The SFWMD covers 16,164 square miles, and is divided into four regional planning areas that are generally defined by hydrologic divides (see map on right). There are some notable differences between the regions in terms of water sources and uses. For example, the Lower West Coast region uses numerous aquifers to meet its urban and predominantly agricultural water demands. By comparison, the Lower East Coast region relies on one aquifer, the Biscayne, to meet its demands.
