The SFWMD's regional system of canals, levees and water control structures has, for more than 50 years, helped to blunt the impact of flood and drought. But because it was designed to meet the needs of a much smaller, less developed population, it can be strained today by extremes; and lacks adequate storage and flexibility. The remedy: changes and improvements to the regional system working hand in hand with ecosystem restoration efforts. The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan, the largest and most comprehensive of these efforts, will improve the effectiveness and efficient of the region's systems.
Similarly, older communities, built before more stringent rules were written to protect people and the natural environment, may flood too easily or often. Here again, the SFWMD and local and state governments are working to upgrade and modernize the many levels of regional and local water management systems.
