The St. Lucie Estuary is a major coastal resource of eastcentral Florida. It supports a variety of commercial and recreational activities, and provides an important habitat for many aquatic organisms. This estuary islocated at the east end of the Okeechobee Waterway which crosses south central Florida. It also acts as a navigational channel and outlet for discharges of excess fresh water from Lake Okeechobee and the St. Lucie canal basin. The St. Lucie Estuary surface water monitoring program is part of a Surface WaterImprovement and Management (SWIM) program that began in 1989. The areas of interestare the St. Lucie Inlet and both the north and south forks of the St. Lucie River. The water quality monitoring program provides a water quality data base for1.Documenting problem areas within the St. Lucie Estuary system, and especially those that may be related to point source discharges2.Locating and reviewing any existing stations and data that might exist and comparing the data3.Locating and establishing monitoring stations in the estuary not currently being monitored4.Determining parameters that will best evaluate the water quality of the estuary5.Documenting long term trends within the estuary, especially in areas where good biological or water quality data currently exists. The SE project began in October 1989. The collection and analysis of the sampleswere contracted to a private firm during the first year of the study. In October1990 the collection and analysis of the samples was taken over by the SFWMD.The data can indicate changes in water quality and allow for better management ofthe estuary for environmental enhancement and prevention of any further degradation.
