The Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) Rule 40E-63 governs the sampling requirements of Stormwater Treatment Area 3/4, which was constructed to fulfill the goals of the Rule (improve water quality in the Everglades). Monitoring of surface water in STA 3/4 is conducted in accordance with the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) and the 1994 Everglades Forever Act (EFA) Ch. 373.4592 permits (issued by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP). The permits include specific conditions requiring the District to monitor water quality at the inflows and outflows of the STA. Phosphorus is naturally removed in aquatic systems by means of deposition and/or is being taken up by aquatic plants. The monitoring described in this document began in December 2003. Monitoring for optimization will continue indefinitely in support of the objectives of the Long Term Plan (LTP). A mercury monitoring program is also required by the EFA. |
